Finlay Rowe
Hey, I am finlay!
Hello, I am Finlay. I mostly draw weird things then add them to my work. I like illustrating and animating my creations, motion is important to how I work digitally. Physically I like to make books, both for children and adults, storytelling and experimental layouts are always a focus when I make them. A goal of mine is to create a work with a large overreaching narrative one day.
Soft Shapes
Soft Shapes is a cloth book for babies to read during “tummy time”, when a baby is left on its stomach to build its neck and back strength. The entire book is printed in black and white, as babies can only see high contrast black and white from birth to around the first three months of life. The book is drawn with basic shapes and smiley faces, to help bolster an infant's pattern recognition.
Soft Shapes was made with a technique called puff binding, wherein an emulsion was applied to a silkscreen to cloth, causing the black sections of the artwork to “puff up” when passed through a heat press, this creates a unique texture for babies to touch and play with.
The book was printed on a single large sheet of cloth and can fold out into a large playmat after reading time is over.
Egregore
Egregore is a digital dark fantasy book inspired by artist Plastiboo’s Vermis series. It is an introduction to a story I created myself, told through the characters in the world. Each page describes a character or place which gives a glimpse into a larger world. The book is entirely digital as it was made with the idea that it can be shared online for free and distributed to as many people as possible.
Dream Quest
Dream Quest is a hypothetical introduction to a series of stories about dreams, filled with characters going on a journey through the dream of a boy. The book was drawn with pen and ink and then scanned and edited digitally. The only colours in the book are dark blue and white. Since making the book for my brief I have redesigned the cover, reprinted the book with a better technique and drawn and animated more characters for the book. In future I would love to retry this project digitally in full colour, I feel this could be a passion project of mine.
