Hey, I am Jenny!
My name is Yoonji, but I prefer to be called Jenny! My passion lies in creating fun and colorful characters, illustrations and designs which feel organic and ‘handmade’, which it often is as I prefer to work with traditional art medium. I see my work as a way to build character, for both myself and the viewers, which further goes on to build humane community, to see the humans within the design.
Little Footsteps
Little Footsteps is a charity campaign in collaboration with Save The Children UK to promote more acceptance of kids in public spaces through safer public space and behaviour from other adults. As there has been increasing number of anti-social or hostile behaviour towards children and parents in social spaces such as restaurants or libraries, numerous studies noted how this is affecting their development. To counter this, Little Footsteps have created two penguin characters: Gwinn Penn the ‘adult’ and Eggwin the ‘child’, them symbolising the different audience of this campaign, which can be used to create posters and other promotional material which can be placed in communities to remind people to be more accepting of children. After all, “it takes a village to raise a child”!
Beyond the Colony
Mushrooms are considered the largest living organism on Earth with can form networks across a wide area. It is also both beneficial and harmful in cases as it is part of the natural cycle, yet some of them can be poisonous and even parasitical to some animals. These characteristics seem quite similar to how humans connect with each other, especially in parasocial connections, where while people can relate beyond physical distances yet not all of them can have positive impact, sometimes even being artificial or forceful to some.
Beyond the Colony narrates a character who is alone and disconnected in a world where everyone is connected as mushrooms. Their looks, their behaviour, their thoughts; their very being is deeply similar and intertwined.
In the age of parasocial relationships, it aims to make readers think on what is genuine connection, and if a connection without being oneself is beneficial.
The Heart of a Ghost
With the Heart of a Ghost was a book that I had read that impacted my view on how losses and grief can be expressed. As this is a Korean book, although it has an English translated version, I felt like the original cover did not reflect the tone and theme of the contents very well which was why I decided to design an alternative English cover. Mainly focusing on designing a decorative type which was still legible yet reflective of the book’s origin, I created the cover and inside illustrations with each chapter of book in mind.
